Introduction

Katria katria is a medium sized fish and it is the only member of its genus.

It has a standard length of 5."

It is found in Mangoro and Nosivolo Rivers in east-central Madagascar.

Taxonomy
(Click for details of Cichlid taxonomy)

Katria katria was first described by Reinthal & Stiassny, 1997 as Ptychochromoides katria.

Subsequently on the basis of molecular analysis and other feature Sparks and Smith assigned it to the new genus Katira.

It is the only member of its genus.

Description
(Click for description of fish body parts)

Katria reaches a length of about 5.1 " (SL).

Katria katria has 14-15 dorsal spines total, 9-11 dorsal soft rays.

It has three anal spines: 3 ;and 8-9 anal soft rays.

The Vertebrae are between : 29 - 31.

There are two wide, black vertical bars on the flanks.

Geographical distribution

Katria katria is found in Nosivolo River and Mangoro in Tamatave Province, Madagascar, Africa.

Habitat :

Katria katria lives in rivers amongst sand and gravel bottom and scattered boulders.

Conservation Status :

IUCN Red list shows status of Katria katria as "Vulnerable ".

This species has a restricted distribution within the Nosivolo and Mangoro rivers, but its habitat is in very good condition and it does not have to deal with either exotic predators or competitors.

Given the lack of evidence for decline in quality of habitat or population size (it is a very common species within its range) this species is assessed as Vulnerable on account of its restriction to a single location
